Tips For: Recommendation Request

The goal in creating a ticket is to include enough information so that we can provide the help that you need in our first response. Otherwise, time and effort will be wasted on requests for more information and clarification. Please use the tips below to make the message body and the attachments to your email as effective as possible:

Message Body

Please begin by identifying yourself. Include your current name and the name you were using when you took my course (if different). Identify the course number, course section, and semester in which you took the course. You do not need to provide extra details here. I will be asking you to fill out a form that includes details (see below).

In the body of your email, please describe the application process that you would like me to support. Include the name of the program (or job) to which you are applying here in the body of the email as well. Include a description of the timeframe for the application(s) and an estimate of when a letter of recommendation would be due.

Attachments

The items listed below should be uploaded to the ticket created from this email. If you already have them available, then include them as attachments to this email. Otherwise, you can upload them later in a reply or attach them to a ticket that you have already created (see Replying and Opening the Ticket Page in Correspond).

Please use Adobe Acrobat Reader to complete a copy of the following PDF form for the application that you will be making. Then, upload a copy of the completed PDF form to your ticket. Be sure to use the Adobe Reader tools to complete the form. There have been frequent problems in the past where students have created PDF forms using the macOS Preview application that were not readable when I received them. The PDF form is available here:

Also, please upload any other documents that would help me write a more effective letter of recommendation for you. These might include:

  • Your resume.
  • The cover letter that you are using for a job application.
  • A sample assignment document that you submitted in my course.
  • A research statement.
  • A teaching statement.

If you are experiencing problems trying to attach files to your ticket, I recommend that you play my tutorial Attaching Files to HelpDesk Tickets.
